Is my IP address private or public, and how can I tell?

The scope badge in the analysis result shows whether the address is public, private, reserved, loopback, multicast, or documentation. Private IPv4 ranges are 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, and 192.168.0.0/16; IPv6 unique-local addresses start with fd00::/8. If you are on a home or office network, your device likely has a private address and your router holds the public one.

Do you store my IP address?

Accepted Answer

No. The public IP is fetched directly from a third-party echo service (ipify) into your browser, and all analysis runs locally. iGotTools does not log, store, or send your IP to its own analytics. Only anonymous interaction events such as tool run and copy are recorded.

Why is the IP shown here different from what I expected?

Accepted Answer

A VPN, proxy, corporate network, or carrier-grade NAT can change the public IP your traffic exits from. The api64 endpoint also negotiates IPv4 or IPv6 depending on your connection, so the family may differ from another tool. Use the Refresh button to re-fetch the current value.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses written as four octets, while IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses written as eight hextets. IPv6 can represent a vastly larger address space, and many networks now negotiate IPv6 first. This tool shows which version your connection uses and analyzes either family.

Why doesn't this tool show my location or ISP?

Location, ISP, and ASN lookups require a paid, key-gated geolocation database. This page intentionally stays free, login-free, and privacy-forward, so it only echoes your public IP and analyzes the address itself. No approximate geolocation is inferred or stored.

What do the decimal, hex, and binary values of my IP mean?

An IP address is a number. The decimal, hex, and binary rows show the same address in different bases, which is useful for firewall rules, log analysis, database ranges, and debugging. IPv6 values use BigInt because the 128-bit number is too large for a regular JavaScript number.

What is the reverse DNS (in-addr.arpa / ip6.arpa) label?

Accepted Answer

Reverse DNS maps an IP address back to a hostname through the DNS system. The in-addr.arpa zone is used for IPv4 and ip6.arpa for IPv6. This tool computes the label locally from the address bits; it does not perform a live DNS lookup, so it shows the query name, not the resolved hostname.

Can I check an IP address that is not mine?

Yes. Paste any IPv4 or IPv6 address into the analysis field and the tool will classify its version, scope, class, base conversions, subnet preview, and reverse DNS label. The address is analyzed entirely in your browser and is not sent anywhere, so it is safe to inspect arbitrary addresses.

Can this tool detect if I am on a VPN or proxy?

Accepted Answer

No. VPN and proxy detection requires a constantly updated database of exit-node, hosting-provider, and known-proxy ranges, which needs a paid API. This page only shows the public IP your traffic exits from and analyzes the address itself; it does not classify whether that exit is a VPN or proxy. To confirm a VPN is working, compare the shown IP before and after toggling it.

Why would I convert an IP address to decimal, hex, or binary?

Accepted Answer

Firewall rules, log analysis, database range queries, and network debugging often need an IP as a plain number rather than dotted text. Decimal form is common in access logs and allowlists; hex appears in packet captures and low-level tools; binary makes it easier to see subnet and prefix boundaries by eye. This tool shows all three forms of the same address.
